On the way to the Bioeconomy

In the field of biotechnology there are two global trends that are most relevant to modern society.

Health (including the environment and wastes) and food production. Main application tasks, as before, be formulated in these areas. A relatively new theme will become more active in the development of interdisciplinary fields — for example, the synthesis of chemistry and biotechnology, medicine and biotechnology of food production, biotechnology, and information processes. There are many points of intersection that will give a synergistic effect.

Therefore, bacteria that produce electricity, or food in pill form will likely remain exotic. If we talk about the development of biotechnology in Russia, there is the difficulty. Today we have no reliable information of the magnitude of the achievements of Soviet science, which left us a legacy. With the achievements of world science to predict how it will develop applied technologies in our country, it is even more difficult.

I am sure that Russia clearly fits in two areas that I have outlined above — health and nutrition. In both directions Russia has a significant reserve. In addition, for the development of biotechnology industries in the field of food and agriculture, our country has significant untapped renewable resources.

So it is important not just to replace old technologies with new and more secure but also to enhance the culture of agricultural technologies, to create local information centres, which will raise farmers knowledge applicable in a given place.
